About Ayurvedic Postpartum Protocol
The five universal elements are the building blocks of Nature, they make up all of what we are
-
Ether
-
Air
-
Fire
-
Water
-
Earth
There are three main combinations of these earth elements which create unique constitutions. Generally each of us has influence from all three, but has one which is the greatest. These are called Dosha constitutions.
-
Vata: ether and air
-
Pitta: fire and water
-
Kapha: earth and water
We each have our unique balances, and when they become imbalanced, physical and emotional symptoms may arise. Both internal and external changes can create imbalances. For example: the changing of the seasons might bring about imbalances depending on our unique constitution.
During the postpartum period, the Vata constitution dominates due to the intense change that birth brings, and all of the empty internal space in the body that is now full of air.
The qualities that make up Vata include light, dry, cold, moving, rough, and sudden or changing
A good rule for Ayurveda is: like increases like, opposites balance
So we balance aggravated Vata by bringing in sensory experiences with the opposite qualities of Vata dosha.
Some balancing qualities for Vata include:
-
Grounding
-
Moist
-
Warmth
-
Steady
-
Quiet
-
Routine
During the postpartum period, this balancing can happen through care and ritual such as
-
Warm, soft, nourishing, whole foods
-
Warm baths
-
Staying in and around bed
-
Keeping room warm and cozy
-
Always wearing socks or slippers if you leave bed
-
Warm oil massages
-
Creating a general routine
-
Limiting visitors
-
Prioritizing rest
-
Practicing grounding breathwork and meditation
-
Limiting external stimulation
